That is not just a tooling preference. It matches the learning-science pattern across IES and EEF guidance: ask deep explanatory questions, use worked examples, model thinking aloud, and have the learner explain the steps back in their own words.

This is where a lot of advice online gets sloppy. The products are useful, but the access rules are not interchangeable.
Fact: OpenAI’s Terms of Use, effective December 11, 2024, say users must be at least 13 and that users under 18 need parent or guardian permission. OpenAI’s Study Mode FAQ says Study Mode is currently available across ChatGPT plans.
Implication: Study Mode is a strong workflow tool for adults and teens, but for a typical 10-year-old it should be treated as an adult-mediated tool, not a direct default.
Fact: Google’s current Family Link guidance says a parent can enable Gemini Apps for a child under 13, with added protections, feature limitations, and region constraints.
Implication: Gemini is the most relevant mainstream option if a parent wants supervised direct access for an under-13 child, but adults should still assume filters are imperfect and supervise use.
Fact: NotebookLM’s official help says browser access is for users above 13 years of age or the applicable age in their country, and positions the product around grounded answers with citations and source-based outputs.
Implication: NotebookLM is best used by the adult preparing a trustworthy explanation, study guide, or quiz from source material.
Fact: Khan Academy’s help center says, as of February 3, 2026, students can access Khanmigo through district partnerships, homeschooling through parents, or adult purchase for those over 18. Khan Academy’s parent guidance also says parents with a purchased plan can enable Khanmigo on up to 10 child accounts and review chat history.
Implication: Khanmigo is more usable for child workflows than broad chatbot advice sometimes suggests, but access is still conditional.
Fact: Anthropic launched Claude for Education on April 2, 2025 as a higher-education offering.
Implication: Claude’s Learning Mode is pedagogically relevant, but it is not my primary recommendation for a 10-year-old workflow.
Bottom Line
If you want the safest default that still works well, do this:
- adult gathers the exact problem
- adult uses AI to map prerequisites and generate a structured explanation
- adult checks the explanation for truth and age fit

- child gets direct chatbot access only when the product and account model actually support it
